Reddish-purple flower head 1½ to 2 inches across on a very spiny, rounded bract.
Leaves are 3 to 6 inches long and up to 2 inches across, alternately attached at the stem. Each leaf has 3 or more narrow lobes with a ½-inch long sharp yellowish spine at the tip of each lobe. Spines and white hairs cover the leaf surface and the stem.
Like other thistles, the seeds have plumes to carry them off in the wind.
