Lots of new things blooming at Wild River State Park since the last trip there 2 weeks ago: blue cohosh, early meadow rue, wild blue phlox, carrion flowers, miterwort, buttercups, prairie blue-eyed grass, racemed milkwort, smooth Solomon’s seal, hoary puccoon, and the first prairie phlox of the season. Spring is in full swing now with lots of spring ephemerals blooming somewhere near you. Over the past week I’ve been to Wild River State Park, Long Lake Park and Sucker Lake Park. (more…)
At Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, it looks like the trout lilies won’t be blooming much longer. I didn’t see any Dutchman’s breeches blooming today so they may be done for the season, but I can’t be sure. In the woods there, Canadian violet and wood anemone are starting to bloom. (more…)
Marsh marigold is now blooming at Sucker Lake park, but seems to have disappeared from Long Lake park. Also at Sucker Lake, some variety of trillium (not large-flowered, though) is budding and meadow rue is sprouting. Sadly, it looks as though there’s an infestation of garlic mustard there as well. This past weekend I was down at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park on a field trip with the MN Native Plant Society. Only Dutchman’s breeches and a few wild ginger plants were in full bloom. (more…)
Yesterday I spent the afternoon at Long Lake Regional Park. A lot of green things are sprouting and I expect to see the first violets blooming in another week, maybe sooner. (more…)
